‘Coffee’ is a hot drink that has an important place in many cultures, including Turkish culture. It is known that an average of 1.1 kilograms of coffee is consumed per person per year in our country. Let’s take a look at the historical development of this drink, which is consumed so much in our homes;
The History of Coffee
It is quite sad that there is no definitive information on this subject. However, there is a rumor that everyone has passed on from mouth to mouth. This story is as follows; A shepherd who grazes his goats in the Abyssinian region of Ethiopia today notices something unusual about the goats and begins to observe them. He sees that the goats eat fruit from an unknown tree and that their alertness increases afterwards. We encounter two different narratives from this point on in the story.
According to the first narrative; The shepherd takes this plant to the village elders to seek advice. The dervishes think that this effect seen in goats is also seen on humans and that it is miraculous. First, it was powdered and consumed by putting it in bread dough. Then, it was added to water and started to be consumed.
According to the second version; when the shepherd took this plant to the village elders, they thought it was a fruit and ate it. The unprocessed coffee plant tasted bitter at first. For this reason, they threw it into the fire that was burning in the middle. After a while, people who heard the delicious coffee smell spreading around became curious and tried it as a drink. In this way, coffee started to spread in the region in a short time.
In the 1000s A.D., it came to Yemen from Abyssinia and spread more quickly there. Afterwards, it was produced in Yemen and started to spread.
The Turks’ Introduction to Coffee
As the Ottoman Empire’s rule extended to Yemen, the Ottoman state also became acquainted with coffee. During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent in 1517, the sultan who tasted coffee brought it to Istanbul and ensured that coffee was recognized in the palace. Afterwards, masters were trained and concubines were trained.
